The remaining chatbots were evaluated with evaluation studies (27.77%), questionnaires (27.77%), and focus groups (8.33%). The findings point to improved learning, high usefulness, and subjective satisfaction. According to Garcia Brustenga et al. (2018), EC can be designed without educational intentionality where it is used purely for administrative purposes to guide and support learning. The ECs were also developed based on micro-learning strategies to ensure that the students do not spend long hours with the EC, which may cause cognitive fatigue (Yin et al., 2021). Furthermore, the goal of each EC was to facilitate group work collaboration around a project-based activity where the students are required to design and develop an e-learning tool, write a report, and present their outcomes. Next, based on the new design principles synthesized by the researcher, RiPE was contextualized as described in Table 5.
Moreover, data analytics from chatbot interactions provide valuable insights to educators, helping them adapt their teaching methods and improve student outcomes. Chatbots in education
Accordingly, chatbots popularized by social media and MIM applications have been widely accepted (Rahman et al., 2018; Smutny & Schreiberova, 2020) and referred to as mobile-based chatbots. Nevertheless, given the possibilities of MIM in conceptualizing an ideal learning environment, we often overlook if instructors are capable of engaging in high-demand learning activities, especially around the clock (Kumar & Silva, 2020). Chatbots can potentially be a solution to such a barrier (Schmulian & Coetzee, 2019), especially by automatically supporting learning communication and interactions (Eeuwen, 2017; Garcia Brustenga et al., 2018) for even a large number of students. The future of mobile learning chatbots seems bright, with much room for improvement and creativity.
Policies should specifically focus on data privacy, accuracy, and transparency to mitigate potential risks and build trust within the educational community. Additionally, investing in research and development to enhance AI chatbot capabilities and address identified concerns is crucial for a seamless integration into educational systems. Researchers are strongly encouraged to fill the identified research gaps through rigorous studies that delve deeper into the impact of chatbots on education.
Many of them are aware that the hardest part in motivating employees to study is organizing the process. Assistants provide real-time updates and available information in an orderly manner. Developers need to go through each dataset thoroughly, making sure it provides the right content for chatbots learning. However, once the assistant processed several clusters, it would be ready to distinguish useful information automatically. In the same way, as word processing tools tell us that our texts are too wordy, complex machine-learning algorithms will be able to assess and grade students’ writing on a particular subject.
Google Duplex, introduced in May 2018, was able to make phone calls and carry out conversations on behalf of users. It showcased the potential of chatbots to handle complex, real-time interactions in a human-like manner (Dinh & Thai, 2018; Kietzmann et al., 2018). Educational chatbots (ECs) are chatbots designed for pedagogical purposes and are viewed as an Internet of Things (IoT) interface that could revolutionize teaching and learning. These chatbots are strategized to provide personalized learning through the concept of a virtual assistant that replicates humanized in the education paradigm, ECs are still novel with challenges in facilitating, deploying, designing, and integrating it as an effective pedagogical tool across multiple fields, and one such area is project-based learning. Therefore, the present study investigates how integrating ECs to facilitate team-based projects for a design course could influence learning outcomes.
Educational institutions’ main stakeholders (teachers, pupils/students, and parents) are confronted with bottlenecks as they entirely move to online education. EdTech market growth is characterized by shifts in technological demands and innovation, a propensity to integrate AI chatbots in both teaching and learning processes, and a user-centric product development strategy. Remote education involves a lot of time invested in finding answers to a wide range of educational issues. Thus, teachers, pupils, and parents will need to find solutions regarding how to save time while searching for relevant information to their inquiries.
The beauty of chatbot technology is, first and foremost, in its high personalization capacity. If an assistant is equipped with natural language processing algorithms and machine learning, it will easily analyze the patterns of users’ speech and change the learning style accordingly. Ideally, in the future, we might see a reality where chatbots adapt to different learning styles as well — be it visual, audial, kinesthetic, or mixed. As the global e-learning market continues to grow, it is clear that technology is here to stay in the field of education.
Firstly, we define the research questions and corresponding search strategies and then we filter the search results based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Secondly, we study selected articles and synthesize results and lastly, we report and discuss the findings. Six (16.66%) articles presented educational chatbots that exclusively operate on a mobile platform (e.g., phone, tablet).

Students can access top-tier STEM content from prestigious institutions, which was previously only available to a select few.
However, this study contributes more comprehensive evaluation details such as the number of participants, statistical values, findings, etc. Okonkwo and Ade-Ibijola (2021) discussed challenges and limitations of chatbots including ethical, programming, and maintenance issues. If a class comprises of a large number of students, then giving personalized care and attention to each student becomes practically impossible for teachers. Not only they can take the weight off the teacher’s shoulders, but they can also work with multiple students and groups simultaneously. Chatbots can interject interactive quizzes, flashcards, and even interactive stories right within your learning path, making the experience far from monotonous.
Lapina (2020) added that problem-based learning and solving complex problems could improve the need for cognition. Hence, when both classes had the same team-based project task, the homogenous nature of the sampling may have attributed to the similarities in the outcome that overshadowed the effect of the ECs. Equally, for motivational belief, which is the central aspect needed to encourage strategic learning behavior (Yen, 2018). Subsequently, motivational beliefs are reflected by perceived self-efficacy and intrinsic values students have towards their cognitive engagement and academic performance (Pintrich & de Groot, 1990).
Pérez et al. (2020) identified various technologies used to implement chatbots such as Dialogflow Footnote 4, FreeLing (Padró and Stanilovsky, 2012), and ChatFuel Footnote 5. The study investigated the effect of the technologies used on performance and quality of chatbots.
